Fernando Garcia, MD

A Leader in Robotic Surgery

About Fernando

Dr. Fernando Garcia is currently one of the leading robotic surgeons in the United States, having performed one of the highest number of successful robotic surgeries.

Yet Fernando's path was anything but conventional. Neither of his parents had beyond a second-grade education, and Fernando himself never officially completed high school - partway through, he was sent back to Mexico to work on his uncle's farm. Yet he always knew he wanted to come back. Fernando learned quickly to be self-reliant. In between fieldwork, Fernando self-studied for a high school equivalency exam that allowed him to enter community college in California. A few years later, he applied and transferred UC Berkeley, where he became deeply involved with the Latin American community (ultimately founding one of their dance teams!). He then set his sights on medical school: after finishing up his studies, Fernando went on to study at Stanford Medical School.

Now, Fernando serves as an attending trauma surgeon at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, TX, and is also the director of robotic general surgery. He cares deeply about empowering minority students to achieve at high levels—even if all the odds are stacked against them.

This is his story.
